Kibuye, further south is another lakeside resort and near Cyangugu on the southern shores of the lake are the magnificent grottoes of Kaboza and Nyenj. There are also the thermal waters at Nyakabuye while nearby the Rugege forest is the home of many rare species of wildlife.
Apart from Nyakabuye there are other places that you can get close to Rwanda’s fantastic wildlife and these places include the A’Kagera National Park that covers over 2,500 square kilometres of savannah to the west of the A’Kagera River. There are a variety of animals in this park and it also serves as habitat to more than five hundred species of birds with the easiest point of access being Kabarando. Embark on a gorilla trek at the Parc national des Volcans which is currently guarded by military units who ensure the safety of visitors. After this, you can also go climbing the Virunga Volcanoes between Ruhengeri and Gisenyi and the Nyiragongo in Democratic Republic of Congo is easily climbed from Gisenyi.
